Located in the Vembanad lake, Thanneermukkam bund is the largest mud regulator in India. It prevents brackish water from entering the low-lying paddy fields of Kuttanad. The difference in salinity gives different tinges to the water on both sides of the bund. Many tourists flock to the area to see the phenomena. During monsoon, the shutters are opened and thus the lower areas are protected from floods. Thanneermukkam bund also facilitates road transport as the National Highway passes above it.
