Thekkady Waterfalls
Who doesn't wish to take a break from the hamster wheel of daily routines and find that perfect place to recharge one's batteries. While it's no newsflash that Kerala is one of the top tourist hubs in India, it's still rare to find a destination here that offers an experience that goes beyond what's advertised. But there exists such a place that is guaranteed to inspire awe and wonder in every traveler who arrives here. It almost sounds like a marketing gimmick, one that's too good to be true.
Wait! Why Thekkady? What about the houseboats and coconuts?
Enter Thekkady, a hill station that is easy to skip through in travel brochures that blare out everything, from the famous houseboats to the ubiquitous coconuts found in this tropical state. The term ‘Thekkady' literally translates to ‘Teak Trees' and this hill station is located in the district of Idukki. A valley paradise that lies nestled in the bosom of the Western Ghats, at an altitude of 900-1800 m above sea level.
From fancy resorts, cozy homestays, access to food and beverages, good roads, and public utilities, Thekkady has all the right ingredients that make it an ideal getaway to relax and unwind.
The Ying and Yang of a perfect vacation
In a typical sightseeing tour of Thekkady, you get to experience the splendors of its lush forests, its sprawling plantations of tea, coffee, and spices, a wildlife sanctuary, the majestic Periyar lake, a tiger reserve, crystal clear waterfalls, and a pleasant climate that's neither too warm nor too cold. With so many places to visit, Thekkady is truly a traveler's delight.
The Ying and Yang of the perfect vacation lie between planning and impulsiveness. It is important to have a general idea about the list of places you want to visit in Thekkady. But a rigid plan might ruin the excitement and joy of exploration. Don't hesitate to tread the unexplored path that branches off the highway. But make sure that you are mindful of your time. Nobody likes to miss the key attractions in their travel checklist.
We share with you these locations in Thekkady to experience two uniquely different waterfalls that will help you make the most of your trip. One is a pretty well-known tourist spot, while the other is only known by the locals. These locations aren't too far off a typical Munnar-Thekkady tour package. They will satisfy your need for exploration without compromising your travel plans. Just bear in mind that the best season to visit will be during the monsoons.
1) Chellarkovil waterfalls
Your first sight of the Chellarkovil falls will leave you breathless. It is impossible not to be blown away by the sight of water cascading from tall and dense green peaks of the Western Ghats. The Chellarkovil village lies around 17 km away from Thekkady and is one detour you shouldn't miss.
Once you've caught your breath, you will soon realize an interesting fact about this place. If you've ever wished to be in two places at once, this is your chance to strike this off your wish list. Chellarkovil lies very close to the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. They are in fact so close that the peak of the waterfall starts in Kerala and lands in Tamil Nadu.
2) Mlamala waterfalls
The Mlamala falls are located 19 km away from Thekkady. Your journey will take you through serpentine roads that gently twist and turn through the valley. A pleasant drive through the scenic backdrop of tea plantations will get you to your destination. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the friendly locals of this sleepy town. They will guide you to the trail that leads to the falls.
You can play in the mineral-rich water and have fun at Mlamala, which is relatively safer. The water has a depth of about 3 to 5 ft. but could vary depending on the season of your visit. The height of the Mlamala falls is around 30 ft. This might seem tiny when compared with Chellarkovil but the sight of a clear, flowing stream of water that you can reach and dip your legs in, is an experience you shouldn't miss.
Thekkady – One for all and all for one
Thekkady is a dream destination that can be enjoyed by all and has something for everyone. You could be a solo traveler exploring the bounties of mother nature, a family out to have some fun, a couple looking to spend quality time with each other, or a group of friends seeking adventure. No matter who you are, a vacation to Thekkady is an opportunity to create memories that can be cherished over a lifetime.
